Cultural Differences Between the UK and Australia

It was really informative to have the company of a work colleague on Saturday who has been in Australia just a few years after spending the majority of her life in the UK. We were talking a lot about differences between the UK and Australia. It’s easy to pick up that because of the weather, Australia is very much a cafĂ© culture. I was telling her that I was surprised on Friday when I went to the grocery store, that I found the prices very high. I thought maybe it was because a lot of things that I picked up were imported but most of them said “product of Australia” on them so that couldn’t be. She said that people in Melbourne don’t actually cook at home a lot. She said when you look at real estate ads for homes for sale, you rarely see a picture of a kitchen, because there’s usually not much there and people aren’t all that interested. She said it is not uncommon on a Saturday to meet a group of friends out for lunch/brunch, and then meet another group later for dinner. Fascinating, huh?

I also learned about something called "tall poppy syndrome". See this great wikipedia article if you are not sure what that means.
